The City of the Good People
This former seat of the Srivichaya Empire and is the largest province in the south. The terrain of this province is marked with high plateau and mountains covered with wood forests in the west and low basins in the central and eastern seashore area. There are a tremendous number of islands along the coast and two major rivers, Tapi River and Phum Duang River. Ferries to Thailand''s "Famous Three", Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao, all leave from Surat Thani.
The places of interest here are Wat Phra That Chaiya, Chaiya National Museum, Wat Suan Mokha Phalaram and the Monkey-training school, where tourists can view dozens of wild monkeys trained as coconut collectors.
